Wilbor House, 548 West Main Road (Route 77), Little Compton, RI

In the mid-19th century, Wilbor House was occupied by two brothers, Oliver and William Wilbor.  Because both were married and desired privacy, they divided the house between the two families.  As a result, Oliver added the kitchen to the north side of the 18th century room.  Its oak graining and spattered floor reflect the period style.
Upstairs, a painted "cottage" bedroom set furnished the Victorian bed chamber.  This was in the family of the late Town Clerk, Philip B. Wilbur, and his sister, Lois Wilber Sylvia.  Also peculiar to the 1860's is a "hair wreath" made from friends' donated locks of hair.  These were often given as remembrances.

The Barn Museum

Sheltered by a lean-to on the north side of the barn is the "Peggotty."  Sidney Burliegh, Little Compton's famous artist of the 1880's had his studio here.
The Barn Museum built in 1850, remained in use for farming purposes until 1970.  Then it was acquired by the Society, restored, and made into a museum.  It contains an excellent collection of farm implements and vehicles, including a one-horse-shay, ox cart, sleigh, buggy and coach.

Upstairs in the barn is the Portuguese Room.  Displayed here are the cultural contributions and traditions of the Azoreans who came to Little Compton over one hundred years ago.  The corn crib dates to the early 18th century.

The highly unique little building known as the "Peggotty" was built over the hull of a small sail boat which once plied as a ferry from Little Compton to Middletown.
